As we drove along the empty highway, Douglas told me the story of their newest project.

“The Earth began granting powers to a select group of people, called the Awakened, a few years ago. Most of the time, these powers come to the aid of those fighting to save the planet from further climate collapse, though there have been reports of Gaia swelling up in rage and attacking humans indiscriminately.”

“The stories on Clive’s map are real?”

“Completely. The problem is that the Earth has been pretty fickle. For most of the Awakened, their powers faded as soon as immediate danger passed.”

“What’s this got to do with you and Clive?”

“SustainAble charged our labs with researching the anomalies. We’ve been working on a way to tap into that power and keep it flowing, regardless of the Earth’s intentions. Clive hypothesized that we could force a connection with the Earth, using local stones in the amulets he designed, and tap into a source of renewable energy. My contribution was to build a chamber that would connect this limitless power source into the electric grid.”

Douglas paused as he turned onto a gravel road that wound into the woods. Flood lights from the quarry glowed above the canopy.

“That sounds like the technology of the century. What’s the problem?”

“At first, we thought we were researching this great new tech. But tonight Clive realized SustainAble does not want to make a renewable grid. They don’t care about that. It would cut into their profits and threaten the power they’ve accumulated since the collapse. All they want is to expand globally, but the Awakened keep meddling in their plans. They used us to develop a technology that could counter the Awakened, block their powers within a given radius. By the time we realized their true intentions, it was too late. We had already shown them our preliminary results with the amulet and the chamber that required a human body. It was never supposed to be real. It was just one possible engineering solution. Clive wanted me to smuggle everything out of the area tonight and get it to, well, let’s just say to an organization. But SustainAble was one step ahead of us.”

“We’ve got to save him!”

“No, Landon, we’ve got to get his amulet back. In SustainAble’s hands, the tech could—I don’t even want to think about how they might use it. This is the biggest mistake of my life. And of Clive’s, too. I need you to understand that. We’ve been living in a fucking bubble, pretending not to notice all the shit SustainAble has been up to, and I’ll never forgive myself if they use my work to cause even more destruction.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but Douglas jerked the car to the right, turning onto the road that rimmed the deep quarry. We wound around the edge and pulled up to their lab, a windowless, brick building. We got out and walked to the side entrance. Machines scraped and grinded in the distance. I felt the hairs on my arm prickle in the night air as he swiped his security pass.
